IoT connectivity: plan the connection behind every device.

A practical checklist for routers, kiosks, sensors and equipment that need dependable mobile data.

A connected device only creates value when its information reaches the people or systems that need it. For a kiosk, field sensor or remote gateway, choosing a SIM is one step in a wider design that includes coverage, power, device management and the application receiving its data.

THE PRACTICAL TAKEAWAY

Test the device, connection and business application together in the real operating environment.

Describe the operating environment

Record where each device will operate: indoors, in a basement, on a vehicle or at a remote site. Check the hardware model, supported network technologies and antenna arrangement. Published coverage information is a starting point; a pilot at the actual location is more useful for validating the deployment.

Estimate usage from real behaviour

Include routine telemetry, status checks, software updates, remote support and retries after an outage. A device sending small readings can still use significant data during a firmware update. Estimate normal and peak usage, then agree usage visibility and suitable alerts for unexpected consumption.

Choose provisioning and access deliberately

A physical SIM, an embedded SIM and remote provisioning are different considerations. Consumer eSIM plans are not automatically suitable for IoT equipment. Confirm compatibility with the device, provider and deployment model before committing to hardware or a long-term service.

If equipment needs private network access, a fixed address or inbound connectivity, specify that early. Check which options are available for the proposed service; do not assume a standard mobile data plan provides them.

Build for interruptions

Define how equipment stores readings while offline and how it reconnects. A payment kiosk, for example, needs a clear unavailable state and an operational recovery process. Monitoring should show when the last device heartbeat was received and who should respond when it stops.

Connect the data to an action

A useful dashboard answers an operational question: which unit needs attention, what threshold was exceeded or which site has stopped reporting? Agree the integration, alert recipients and device lifecycle process, including replacement, suspension and decommissioning. Pilot a small group before scaling the fleet.
